The athletes reaction to Serena Williams is one topic that stands out to me. Four different athletes (Steve Francis, Gerald Wallace, Mike McKenzie, and Hollis Thompson) all stated that they would like to see Serena simply for her "cat-suit" or her "leopard print" uniforms that she wears during her matches. Only two athletes (Mike Cameron and Erick Strickland) had something else to say about her in terms of her mentally not just viewing her in a physical aspect.
I found it interesting that most of the athletes voted outside of their sport, except for baseball who would pay to see Barry Bonds. That is most interesting to me because most of those guys are actually PAID to see Barry Bonds. These guys are in the dugouts and are on the field competing against him and they still wanted to pay to see Barry Bonds play, which is just astounding to me. I also think its interesting that Amani Toomer wanted to see a Formula-1 racer which is something that is very rare. Finally, I found it interesting that eventual teammates voted for their counter-part, (McNabb voted for Vick and Cassell voted for Garnett).
Zane,
ReplyDeleteI can agree that this article was a good read in a while. On the topic of Serena Williams, I feel that more of the athletes were not being as professional as they could have been. I think if this would have been a documentary instead of write up the responses would have changed as well. It did seem like some athletes were trying to be funny, which is fine but their still needs to be a certain level of respect for Serena's athleticism. On the other hand I was not surprised athletes wanted to pay to see other professional athletes play from their profession. I think this is more of a respect factor as well a competitive one. Obviously it is respect for them just wanting to watch them perform. But it is competitive because although they have paid to watch there is always that thought in their minds of being better or one day being the greatest.

Zane,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you here regarding voting in or out of sports. That to me was very interesting due to the fact that you would think athletes would have more of a respect for the sport they play. Personally,if I were an athlete I would be interested in seeing the sport that I played in a fans view. So much of the time athletes focus on their team and their own game, while fans seem to take in the entire league or sport. Perhaps taking some time to watch as a spectator would do some good for these athletes. This may give them a better appreciation of their impact on the industry, while also helping to simplify the game and get back to the basics that they know how to do.

Zane,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and I like that you brought up that baseball players actually get paid to play against Barry Bonds, I never thought of it that way. I also found Amani Toomer's response to be out of the ordinary but there was also a Chicago Bears player who was really into dogs. He said he would like to go to the Westminister Dog Show.
