Erin Scott: The Pros the Pros Would Pay to See

In the article The Pros the Pros Would Pay to See, athletes from the MLB, NBA, and NFL named off other athletes that they would $1,000 to see play. The first thing that really stood out to me about the article was the fact that McCallum had failed to even bother asking any female athletes who they would like to see play. I think it would have been very interesting to compare who female athletes said they’d like to see play and who male athletes said they’d like to see play.

Another thing that really stood out about the article was the lack of female athletes who were named as athletes the pros would pay to see. There were only two players named, Gabrielle Reese and Serena Williams. Although some of the athletes said they’d like to see Serena because of her skill and performance, the majority of them said something about her cat suit. I’m sure she appreciates the compliments but she’s not a model, she’s an athlete. She has accomplished so much as an athlete and to have her outfit or her sex appeal be the main reason people want to see her play has to slightly offend her.

Other than that the article was very interesting. I didn’t expect Tiger Woods to be the athlete the majority of the pros chose to watch. Lance Armstrong was tied in the 10th spot. I wonder how Lance admitting to doping will affect that standing. Tiger Woods and Michael Vick are still in the top 10, so maybe after a while people will overlook Lance Armstrong’s use of steroids.

  1. Erin,
I completely agree about how the author of the article failed to ask any female athletes who they would like to see play. When it comes to professional sports it always seems that female sports and athletes are overlooked and the only time they are really recognized is when they make a top play of some sort or won a championship. Even though this article was written before a lot of more female athletes have started to stand out in sports in the past couple years it would be really interesting to see if the author of the article would ask both male and female athletes and see if their opinions have changed or if they want to see different athletes play. I personally think Gabby Douglas would be a top female athlete to see perform today after her performances during the Olympics. I thought this article was really interesting as well and I kind of expected Tiger Woods to be at the top due to him always being an outstanding golfer.

  2. Erin,

You bring up a very interesting point in regards to the fact that no one asked any female athletes wanted to watch. Even as a male, I feel that it is rather poor that the fact that these athletes could only think of Serena as a sex object instead of the athlete that she has trained and worked hard to become. I wonder how they would feel if the roles were reversed onto them? It is a very concerning issue, as it probably reflects the views of society as a whole.

Also, the Mike Vick and Tiger Woods scandals had not been released by the time this article came to publication so it is understandable that at the time of publication, they were still ranked as high as they were. You're completely right though, I also wonder how Armstrong's legacy will be affected. But, not only Armstrong, but Bonds as well as Tiger and Vick.
