Introduction: Andrew Hayes

Hey everyone!  My name’s Andrew Hayes, and I’m a Junior from a small town in Southern Ohio called Washington Court House.  I originally came to Bowling Green State University to study Electronics and Computer Technology, but after my first semester I quickly realized it was the wrong path for me.  I chose to switch to Sport Management because it incorporated my two favorite things in the world: Sports and Business.
In high school I played varsity baseball, soccer, golf, and track, as well as junior varsity basketball.   Baseball is by far my favorite sport, and I am a die-hard Cincinnati Reds fan.  Last post-season was heartbreaking, losing the first series to the Giants after being up 2 games to 0.  However, I’m extremely excited for the upcoming season and our newly acquired leadoff hitter, Shin-Soo Choo.
The one female athlete I would pay to see would be Maria Sharapova.  She is a fierce competitor, and is easily underestimated.  She’s known throughout the pop-culture world for her good looks, but as soon as she steps on the court things seem to change.  It is also incredible that she beat Serena Williams at age 17 to win her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.
The male athlete I would pay to see would be Bubba Watson.  I absolutely love golf, and had the opportunity to go to the Memorial last year in Columbus.  I saw Tiger make his now-famous chip and comeback to win the tournament.  I was able to see many of my favorite players, except Bubba.  He has been known to hit the ball over 350 yards off of the tee, making him like a modern-day Happy Gilmore.
I’m extremely excited for this class, and to have my eyes opened to the relevance of gender in the sporting world.  I’m approaching this class with an open mind and a curious attitude.

  1. Hayes,

I love the reference to the Serena Williams Wimbledon tennis match versus Maria Sharapova in 2004. It is crazy to think that she was only 17 and Serena was looking for a three peat. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten about this incredible upset outside of the tennis world and simply only remember Sharapova for her good looks.

  2. Hi Andrew,

I too can remember that upset of Serena by Maria Sharapova in 2004. There was no way anyone could have anticipated an upset like that. What amazed me was how excited Serena seemed to be for Maria. After several years of dominance by the Williams sisters, I think a lot of people were excited to see a new rivalry. But this year at the Olympics, Serena completely destroyed Sharapova. Both seem to be playing well at the Australian Open, so maybe we will see a final between them again! I actually saw them play in the final at the Australian Open in 2007. It was awesome to be there! As for Choo, I can totally understand your excitement for having him join the Reds. I was really sad to see him traded since he was probably the closest to a 5-tool player the Indians had. I guess if he had to go anywhere, it might as well be Cincy.

I appreciate your attitude about the subjects we will be discussing in class.

  3. Andrew,

I would like to say your welcome for Shin-Soo Choo. I hope that he thrives as much as he did in Cleveland, and I know he will be a fan favorite. I also hope that the Reds are able to mend your broken heart this coming season. Finally, would it hurt to think about switching teams and possibly becoming a Tribe fan? They won't break your heart, considering we here in Cleveland know what is coming.
