I personally think that if a woman is capable enough to play
in a men’s pro sport, she should be able to play. I don’t think that would ever
happen in football or basketball but maybe in other sports. We pay to see the
best of the best, so if a woman can compete against their male counterparts at
the highest level, then let them. I could not see a woman play in the major leagues
either, but you never know. There might be the next Justin Verlander or Hank
Aaron as a female. We watched that sport science video where the woman actually
hit harder than the man but if they actually fought in the ring against each
other, would it actually be a good fight? I personally think the man would win
just because they are the same weight class and I think the man could take more
hits than she could throughout the fight. It was said that there was a woman
that played in the NHL and she debuted in 1992. The NHL is kind of a tricky
sport to judge but I think that a woman could definitely play in the last of
the “big four” of sports. It would be interesting to see how other NHL players
would treat her though. Would they take more cheap shots on her because she is
a woman, or would they not attack her as much? Of the big four sports here in
the US, I don’t think a woman could ever play in the NFL or NBA, might be able
to compete in the MLB but she would really have to be good, and a very good possibility
that a woman could find her way on the ice in the NHL.
Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in the fact that I do not think women could compete at the same level as men consistently. If this were allowed I feel like it would be a novelty piece of entertainment at first, just to see a change of pace. However, after time I see the level of competition dropping and this would not be good for the revenue of sport organizations. Personally, I believe the sport science video had some flaws. The technique used by both boxers was not controlled, giving the female the advantage. If both were told to hit at the same angle with more guidelines I think we would see the male come out on top. Great thoughts I really enjoyed your blog.

I believe that there are a number of women that could 'compete' with men in a wide variety of sports. Now whether or not they are successful and/or dominant in that sport is an entirely different conversation, but I believe they could hang with them. For instance, with the Sports Science video, even though the experiment had it's flaws and clearly showed favoritism toward the female, I believe if the two participants fought it would still be a decent fight. She isn't going to get K.O.'d in the first 30 seconds. Do I think she would win? Probably not, but it would still be entertaining enough to watch. Not because of their sex, but because they both clearly showed that they can hit extremely hard. Anyone who can inflict that much force with a punch shouldn't be classified by their sex.

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI also agree with you that women would not be able to compete at the highest level against men. I believe that yes women can compete with men there is no doubt about that. However, the physical nature and genetic make up of us as humans gives males an increased advantage. I do agree that most females have better technique than most males because they actually take time to learn the game and “out smart” their opponent, compared to males where they rely on their physical ability to dominate their opponent. I also agree that women may not be able to play in the NBA, but I do believe that one day a women will make it into the NFL more or less as some type of kicker or punter.
