In class we got into great discussion about
the mixing of boys and girls in sports. My stance on this situation is to not
let either play the opposite genders sport, unless that sport is otherwise not
offered. For example, if a boy wants to play volleyball and the school does not
have a male team, I believe he should be allowed to play with females. This
would go the same for girls, even with the case of football. I think that in
the long run we could see issues with teams being cut or even taken over by
males if that sport is wide open to anybody.
At first I thought that it should be alright
to let females play any sport they pleased, however after more thought I decided
it would be unfair to not allow the same for males. I see the arguments that
males could dominate the sport or hurt the future of female sports, so that is
why I recommend play on your own sport unless it is not otherwise offered. Sport
has taken a shift toward equality in numbers and opportunities, so I feel that
you have to provide the same chances for both genders. In my high school we had
a group of guys who wanted to start a varsity men’s volleyball team, yet only
made it to club level. In my opinion these men should have been allowed to play
on the female team, likewise, I feel that girls should have been allowed to
play football. The case of a female wanting to play football never came up at
my high school however I wish it would have, this would have given me great first-hand
experience in the matter.
Hunter,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with you, I think sport should be divided up between gender unless that sport is not offered for the specific gender. I know in my high school the year after I graduated their was a problem and their was not going to be enough women for the bowling team and they got it approved by the school for the couple of girls to bowl on the men’s team, however the league would no approve it. Eventually the women’s team was able to make a full team and participate. I also agree with the statement that males could/would dominate the game and make it unfair.

Hunter,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you to a certain extent. I believe that girls should be able to play with guys up until about the end of the elementary school age. The reason being because in middle school is when some males begin to develop and it is very evident that they are much more powerful, stronger and faster than the girls. I believe that this is also where the skill level of the two genders dramatically changes in favor of the boys. I believe that even if the sport isn't offered to males at the high school level or middle school level that they should not be allowed to play the female version of the sport. The reason I say this is because the male would make the game unfair for the opposing women. If boys played the opposite gender sport and enough boys wanted to play then we would see the boys taking over the team and the girls not getting to play. I do understand where you are coming from and enjoyed your post.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you Hunter, and saying that males and females should be able to play with each other if they don't have the sport that they want to play. I especially agree with the guys playing on the volleyball team if their school doesn't offer it but I think that they should limit how many boys are allowed on the team. If a guy wants to play on the team it might start making other guys want to join the volleyball team and then it would just be an all boys team but with some rules I think that you should only have like three guys on the team and maybe only have two guys on the floor at the same time. I also think that females should be able to play on the boys team if they want to play the sport and it isn't offered for females. Because if she is good enough to play with males than why not have her on your team it will only help them.
Hunter,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I do agree with the fact that girls and boys should not be able to integrate their respective teams, I do not agree with letting men play on women's teams even if that sport is not offered. There are very few Men's High School volleyball teams in the area. With that being said, if some girls teams had three or four men, while other teams had none, it would be a complete unfair disadvantage. Also, this would put all girl private schools at a disadvantage. Men have countless opportunities to compete in sport, so we should not be intruding in Women's sport under any circumstances.

Hunter,
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you have written for your blog this week. I like how you wish you would have had a female playing football at your school so you could have a first-hand experience in that matter. Actually when I was in high school there was a girl a grade below me who went out for the football team her sophomore year of high school. The coach pushed her so bad to actually come out and play but when the season came she really didn’t see much playing time. She really only received playing time when our football team was ahead and that is when the coach would put her into kick field goals or extra points when a touchdown was scored. In addition I agree with you on how males could play on a female sport only if they didn’t off the sport for the males but they should only limit it to a few males so the males wouldn’t completely take over the sport and dominate it like most people think they would.
