Dan Pesato - Opinion on boys and girls playing sports that are primarily for the opposite sex

After going through the worksheet in class, I was really able to think about the questions that were proposed. I feel that women playing on teams primarily for men are more socially acceptable in the sport world. In my opinion, having a male play on a team with all females just doesn’t seem acceptable. I feel that there would be too many issues with having to incorporate rules in order to avoid complete dominance from the male that plays on the team. Boys should stick to the sports primarily for boys, especially if they want to see their talent increase over the years. I feel that they are more capable of getting better at a sport if they are competing against other boys. I also feel that with how judgmental people are these days, it pushes boys away from even wanting to be apart of a team with all girls.
Now, as I said above, I do feel that a girl playing on teams primarily for boys is acceptable. If a girl has the passion, drive, and competitive nature to put herself out there and compete with boys, then she deserves the opportunity. Her talent level would increase greatly throughout the experience, and it would definitely prepare her for any sport primarily for girls. There will always be situations in which boys will not feel like it is right to compete against a girl when it comes to physicality. The story we talked about in class about the boy that didn’t wrestle because he would have had to face a girl is a great example. These situations will come up, but as I said above, it is up to the girl to take the risk.

  1. Dan,

I agree with you in the sense that it seems to be more acceptable for women to play on primarily men’s sport teams, than it is for men to play on primarily women’s sport teams. However, I do believe men should have that opportunity to play on a women’s team if there is no men’s team offered. In my opinion it is the same concept as what you said about females in your post, about how it would be okay for them to play on a men’s team if they had the passion, drive, and competitive nature. If a male does not have an opportunity to play on a sports team he loves, he should have that opportunity to play on a women’s team. Though men should have this opportunity, there should be a limit on how many boys can play on a women’s team. If there became too many men, then it would take away from the sport for women, but with a set limit, I believe women’s sports could still grow, and there would not have to be a ton of rule changes.

  2. Dan,

I agree with you completely with everything in this post. I never thought about the fact of social acceptability with gender integration in sport. I do see it being much more socially acceptable for Women to compete with the Men then the other way around. I also agree with the fact that Men should not be allowed to compete with Women. There are many reasons I feel this way, but I like the reason you came up with in talking about incorporating new rules. Having Men playing Women's sport would hurt the integrity of the sport. I also do not know any Men who would choose to compete against Women. I also think it is part of parents responsibilities to get their children involved in sports that pose opportunities in the future. Here in Ohio, in may not be a good idea to get your son involved in volleyball. In California, there are numerous Men's volleyball opportunities so it would be good to get your son involved.
