Magazine Report - Aaron Snyder, David Higham, Nick Smith

The Muscle and Fitness magazine we had was from April of 2005. We found 106 total ads in the magazine and a majority of them were for Dietary supplements. Of the 106 total found, 65% of them were for Dietary supplements. Only 11% were for Bodybuilding equipment which was kind of a surprise to us. A good 16% of the ads were for knowledge systems in the magazine. There was only one single ad for each clothing and competitions in the entire magazine. And lastly, there were six cosmetics ads in the magazine. This was the first time I’ve ever gone through a magazine like this and it was kind of surprising to see so many different types of supplements being advertised in the magazine. It was basically an advertisement book for supplements rather than anything else. The other magazine we had was a Sports Illustrated for women book that was released in July/August of 2002. We found a total of 50 photos of women in the book and most of which were Athletic Competence. Of the 50 pictures found, 46% of them were of women in Athletic Competence. Compare that to only 4% of the pictures were soft porn in the magazine. There were only 6% of the ads in sexy babe pictures. Both All-American Girl Next Door and Hyper Heterosexual had 16% of the pictures in the magazine. And last but not least, 12% of the pictures were of women in ambivalence. Nothing to shocking with these numbers across the board, everything seemed to point in the direction we thought it would. The magazines differed acrossed the board because the Muscle and Fitness book was basically an advertisement book and the Women's Sports Illustrated, is not.

  1. Aaron, David and Nick,
First, I'd like to say great job evaluating the two magazines. I found this activity to be very helpful and I hope you guys did as well. Also, I think everyone noticed the same thing in that the fitness magazines were loaded with supplement ads. The supplement ads seemed to take over the magazines. Personally I am very into weightlifting and enjoy seeing the new supplements.
