Brittney Griner Comes Out- Joshua Kovacs
I came across an article today about Brittney Griner, selected number 1 in the WNBA Draft just days prior to this article. She decided to come out and tell everyone that she is gay and her sexual interest is towards women. She said that she has previously talked about her sexuality but has never come out publicly with it. This interview, in which she told the world she was gay, consisted of the No. 2 and No. 3 picks in this years draft also. This is the first time that I have ever herd of an athlete coming out and doing it within a group interview. Brittney said that it wasn't hard for her to come out because her parents always told her to be herself and that is what she is doing. Griner also told everyone to not worry what anyone else thinks and that if your gay, then let that side of you shine through because its who you are. Griner also told the reporter that she has been picked on for being a lesbian and being taller than most women. This article was appropriate due to the recent discussions we have been having in class. I think Brittney Griner can have a Jackie Robinson effect for the WNBA, where players see one of the best women's basketball players in the world come out without any problems.

Joshua,
ReplyDeleteI think this topic is very appropriate especially since the first presentation dealt with homosexuals in sports. I do not think Griner's sexuality will have a major effect on the WNBA. I say this because there a nice amount of homosexuals in the WNBA who are also open. I think it would have been a bigger deal if she came out of the closet while at Baylor. But obviously she may have not been able to due to her university. I like her coming out in a group interview of peers who seem to be okay with it. It is not typical but I think this was a good way to address it especially with just being recently drafted. I think for an athlete to positively affect the sport industry they must come out at an early stage of success and continue with success. For now you have to start somewhere and this is what Griner did!
