Magazine Review - Adam Shanabrook, Andrew Hayes, Zane Langdon

Our group had the Muscle & Fitness magazine from November 2011.  We counted a total number of 84 ads in the magazine. We separated them into 7 different categories including dietary supplements, bodybuilding equipment, knowledge systems, clothes, competitions, sexual enhancements, and dog supplements.
The results of our findings are as follows:
Dietary Supplements - 66 ads - 78.6%
Bodybuilding Equipment - 6 ads - 7.1%
Knowledge Systems - 5 ads - 6.0%
Clothes - 2 ads - 2.4%
Competitions - 1 ad - 1.2%
Sexual Enhancements - 3 ads - 3.6%
Dog Supplements - 1 ad - 1.2%

We also looked at a Sports Illustrated for Women from March/April 2000.  We counted a total number 50 pictures that would fit into the categories we were assigned.  these categories are athletic competence, ambivalence, all-american girl next door, hyper heterosexual, sexy babe, and soft pornography.
The results are as follows:
Athletic Competence - 31 pics - 62.0%
Ambivalence - 8 pics - 16.0%
All-American Girl Next Door - 2 pics - 4.0%
Hyper Heterosexual - 2 pics - 4.0%
Sexy Babe - 6 pics - 12.0%
Soft Pornography - 1 pic - 2.0%

We were shocked to see that there were so many ads for dietary supplements in the Muscle & Fitness.  We expected to see more bodybuilding equipment advertisements.  We were also surprised to see an advertisement for a supplement for a dog in a bodybuilding magazine.  As for the Sports Illustrated for Women, we weren't surprised to see so many pictures of women performing their sport.  We were surprised to see that there weren't more pictures in the other categories such as all-american girl next door.

  1. Adam, Andrew and Zane,
I thought the same thing as I was reviewing the magazines. I thought that there were a lot of supplement ads. I was not too surprised because not many people know a lot about the different supplements and this is a good way to raise awareness. Also, I really liked how your group broke down the two magazines. It was very easy to read and understand.
