Serena and Venus - Aaron Snyder
Last week we talked if Serena and Venus Williams and if they should return to the tennis tournament Indian Wells, and it’s such a hard choice to say if they should, or shouldn’t. Although they ultimately said they would never return to the tournament and have kept their word since after the incident at Indian Wells, I think they should return. I’ve flipped flopped whether they should or shouldn’t but I think it’s time to return and dominate the tournament. If I was Serena and I just got the first ranking in the world back, I would of definitely went back as I would have wanted to keep my number one ranking. I would never do anything to jeopardize that and even though it would mean going back to Indian Wells, I would have gone and did everything to dominate the field. I would definitely still be a little salty about the incident that happened back in 2001 but that was a dozen years ago and the chances of anything like that happening again would be very slim I feel. Like what someone said in class with LeBron, I’m sure he heard his fair share of taunts in his return to Cleveland after he took his talents to South Beach but he has to go back. I know it’s a little bit different as tennis is an individual one on one sport and basketball is a team sport but I just feel as if they should return, well Serena at least

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you saying that Venus and Serena should go back to Indian Wells. However there is only one way I believe that they should go back. If nothing changes, I could understand why the Williams sisters would not go back. The one way I think they should go back is if the President of the tournament at the time, comes out and publically apologizes to the sisters and their family in person and acknowledge that all of the events that occurred at the tournament and the amount of time it has taken to apologize was wrong. If there is a public apology and it is sincere and heartfelt, then I do believe it would be time for them to return, and if I were the sisters I would want to dominate the tournament each year, because winning would help take away the bad memories they occurred there.

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Tyler's comment about them returning to Indian Wells. My thoughts are that if they are true competitors that want to beat the best in the world, showing your skills at a tournament where the best will be at is worth it all. I believe the time from when the incident happened and today they should get passed and rise above the lack of apology. They should just keep to themselves and let their ability and possibility of winning show for themselves rather than a grudge and a boycott.

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI also think that at least Serena should make her return to Indian Hills. I believe that she has made her statement, and is now only hurting herself. She is not bringing any new awareness to the issue, just dragging out consequences and repercussions of the event. I do, however, think there is one reason why I could side with her not going back, and that's the fact that Indian Hills has not acknowledged their poor handling of the incident. If the new director would just issue a statement saying "We are truly sorry for the way the matter was handled years ago involving the Williams family. We are now under new direction and can assure everyone this sort of incident will never happen again." She shouldn't be taking reductions in the point standings because of an event that took place years ago. Serena has always been praised for her competitiveness, and it's not right to watch her choose to sit out an event.

ReplyDeleteAaron,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that the Williams sisters shoould return to Indian Hills. I think after boycotting the tournment for at least 10 years made a stong statement. After that I think they should return to the tournment and make a strong statement and one of the two sisters should win it. Just like what was pointed out, if Lebron would not go back to Cleveland he would be picked apart by fans and critiques. Yes the first time going back is going to be hard but once that is over with every time after that will be easier.

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI ca agree that Serena may have wanted to go back to keep her number one ranking, but at the same time which is more important a ranking or justice. I do not think Indian Wells treated these two ladies fair or correct. If you place in her shoes can you honestly say that if you were treated like this you would go back? I think it brings more attention to the situation by not going back. If she goes back all it proves is that they needed Indian Wells more than Indian Wells needs them. It also tells Indian Wells fans they can act however and expect no punishment. By boycotting she hurts them as much and I think it should continue.

Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI agree that Serena and Venus should return to Indian Wells. The reason I believe this is because being boo'd by bad fans is apart of the game. I definately believe that the staff could have had better crowd control, however, athletes have been boo'd for years. Take for example the early African American's that were first in their sport. Jackie Robinson was boo'd not for his game play peformance but for the color of his skin. If he can keep playing with bad officials and everyone against him, I firmly believe Serena could do the same! She is a role model for young tennis players everywhere. She should be showing them that even through adversity, I can still be the best and win no matter anyone else's opinion.
